How to open .dmg files

In a Macintosh system, the file extension .dmg is treated as a real disk and provides the user with an option to mount it just like a normal volume or to burn it on optical media. The distribution of the .dmg file extension in a PC environment sometimes takes the form of an EXE file format that will extract its contents to a form readily understood by the system. The Apple Disk Utility is geared more towards handling .dmg file extension types than acting as a compression utility. After double clicking on the file extension .dmg, the utility will mount it and allow the user to perform drag and drop functionalities.
